AP SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION
SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL (2022-2023)
Final Score: 4

1. Identify the question(s) or inquiry that guided your sustained investigation. How can I use lighting and composition to portray emotion through sports? How does color impact the interpretation of emotion in an image? Where can I safely position myself in the setting of a busy and confined sports sideline to capture a meaningful moment? How can I alter my vantage point and composition to contribute to the emotional impact of a photograph? How can I work within the creative and physical limitations of live action photography? 2. Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your question(s) or inquiry. I began with editing multiple sports photographs together, and using photoshop to create leading lines and shapes to tell a story (image #2), including portraying motion in sports with sequential images with changes in opacity (image #3). I then began focusing on the raw emotion that occurs on the sidelines, rather than on the field. I experimented with the sparse lighting of the stadium lights to emphasize moments of stress, sharpening the shadows and highlights to create depth (image #9). I learned to work with the factors I can control: vantage point, lighting, composition, and editing.
